n. m. Mammifère lémurien des forêts d'Afrique centrale, à corps trapu, à petites oreilles et à queue courte. Syn. cour. paresseux.

ZOOL. Mammifère lémurien nocturne d'Afrique, à pelage gris, à queue très courte, à petites oreilles, à orbites en position antérieure très rapprochées, qui vit sur les arbres et se nourrit d'insectes, de petits oiseaux, d'oeufs et de fruits. Quand il mord, le potto croche et bloque les mâchoires sur la morsure (P. L. DEKEYSER, Les Mammifères de l'Afrique noire fr., 1955 ds Invent. Particul. Lex. Fr. Afr. n. 1983).
Prononc.:[], [po-]. Homon. poteau. Étymol. et Hist. 1896 (Gde encyclop., s.v. loris). Terme empr. à une lang. de Guinée, selon NED qui l'atteste dep. 1705. L'angl. potto désigne également le kinkajou (1790 ds NED), empl. qui corresp. à la forme poto que Buffon aurait signalée comme un terme indigène désignant le kinkajou de Jamaïque (REY-GAGNON Anglic.).
